Jamesville-DeWitt High School freshmen seem greedy for the ever-popular oatmeal cream pies distributed by Student Assistance Counselor Will Hartley. Mr. Hartley said the supply has gone from six boxes a week to four or five boxes a day.
Mr. Hartley started the OCPs tradition his first year here in December of 1999. This is because he believes "It's a great way to meet new students and let them know that they have someone to talk with."
He doesn't remember what gave him the idea of giving out OCPs, but he continues handing them out because "it provides students with an excuse to come to me without feeling strange. It makes it more relaxed."
Although this is a good way to meet the new students, it's also very costly. He used to give out around 12 cookies a day, but now he's giving out nearly 60 cookies a day.
Students go for the OCPs for that extra boost they might need during their long day. Also, in case breakfast wasn't the first thing on your mind in a morning rush, the OCP is offered as a substitute for time being. "Students who have fifth period lunch, I can understand that they would come here. That's a big stretch from breakfast until lunch," said Mr. Hartley
So what exactly is so appealing about this particular snack?
"Freshmen like OCPs so much because they're delicious!" said Mr. Hartley, "They're individually wrapped with 12 to a box."
"The OCPs are a creamy delight," agreed J-DHS freshman Dan Ortega, "I go every other day, sometimes during lunch." Ortega is not the only frequent visitor, J-DHS freshman Will Farnsworth can relate. "I pretty much go to Mr. Hartley's every single day," said Farnsworth, "the OCPs are amazing. I would still go to his office even if he didn't have the cookies."
Tanisa Shaw, a J-DHS freshman, says that it's not just the cookie that helps her through the day. "Mr. Hartley is a cool guy to talk to," said Shaw, "Plus OCPs are my favorite kind of cookie"”the best part about them is the cream on the inside."
Lee Burns, also a freshman, thinks it's the outside that counts. "The best thing about the OCPs is the oatmeal cookie. I go to Mr. Hartley's almost every day."
At the rate these students are visiting for food, Mr. Hartley had better have a whole storage unit full of OCPs and hope for some larger-sized boxes. "It will be a very sad day if OCPs go less than 12 to a box," said Mr. Hartley. "The day that they do, I'm marching down to the Little Debbie headquarters."
