“I’ve been wanting to do it for several years but the timing was right,” said Jamesville-DeWitt Varsity Girls Volleyball Coach Jim Tuck. What is Coach Tuck referring to? On Feb. 1, the JV and Varsity Girls Volleyball teams played a regular season game against Chittenango with the goal of raising money and awareness for breast cancer. The two schools held a competition to see who could raise the most money and together raised $1,679. Coach Tuck thought that Chittenango would be a good competitor due to their compatibility.”I get along well with (Chittenango’s coach) and I knew it’d be a fun game with a good rivalry,” said Coach Tuck.Coach Tuck chose the foundation More Than a Game to donate the money to.“The More Than a Game foundation donates its money locally to places including Golisano Children’s Hospital and Upstate,” Coach Tuck said.
The teams also sold pink t-shirts with purple writing to help the organization and hoped people would wear them to the game. Pink symbolizes breast cancer while purple symbolizes prostate cancer. “It made me feel good inside,” said senior and varsity player Lexi Lerman. “It was for a good cause,” Lerman added. “I thought we were really successful and it was good that we were doing something for a good cause,” said junior Kristina Gitzen who is also on the varsity team. Senior Sonia Narsipur agrees, saying “I feel like we’ve made a difference in our community.” Junior Jenna Hayward said she would do it again “in a heartbeat.” “I definitely will be looking to do it again next year,” said Coach Tuck.
