Miley Cyrus is a well-known teen icon all around the world. She has starred in a hit TV show, recorded six albums, appeared in three movies, and is only 19 years old. The Disney Channel star first became famous at the age of 14 when she started playing Miley Stewart on the highly successful TV show “Hannah Montana.” Cyrus grew up in the spotlight, and therefore her fans, mostly made up of young girls and tweens, have had high expectations for her.

Cyrus has had her fair share of scandals. Due to her huge career success, she is constantly watched by the press. Cyrus’s drug scandal first surfaced last year when she was celebrating her 18th birthday with a group of friends. Five days after, a video hit the Internet of her smoking salvia from a bong. Salvia is a legal herb with hallucinogenic effects, and the drug is legal in California, according to sun.co.uk. (for more information, read our article from last year.

On Nov. 23, the date of her 19th birthday, Cyrus said, “You know you’re a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake. You know you smoke too much weed,” according to people.com. Cyrus was celebrating at Beacher’s Madhouse inside L.A.’s Roosevelt Hotel with her close friends, including Kelly Osbourne. After the video hit the web, Osbourne came to Cyrus’s defense. She tweeted, “Let me make something very clear after @MileyCyrus salvia incident we started calling her Bob Miley as a JOKE! It makes me sick that @MileyCyrus so called ‘friends’ would sell her out and lead people 2 believe she is someone that she is not.”

Students of Jamesville-DeWitt High School had a lot to say about Cyrus’s most recent incident. “Yeah, I saw the video, and I love her even more for it because it shows that she makes mistakes,” says sophomore Bora Nanaj. Many other students agreed with Nanaj like sophomores Jason Alweis, Erin Mulvey, and Alex Way. “Just because you smoke weed doesn’t mean you’re a bad person,” says sophomore Paul Fitzgibbons.

Many students felt differently about Cyrus’ pot scandal. “I don’t really like her. She used to be a role model,” says freshmen Haley Schultz. Freshman Bella Hylen agrees. “Yeah she’s sketchy now, she’s going down hill,” she said. Freshman Dylan Volk says that parents have probably looked down on this incident. “Parents probably think that their kids shouldn’t look up to her,” he said.

Student Assistance Counselor Will Hartley offers his expert opinion. “I don’t know if the fans will act differently, but its unfortunate because her fan base is young,” he said.
