Jamesville-DeWitt High School Varsity Girls’ Soccer team played a familiar team on Tuesday Nov. 8; Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. This was the third time, J-DHS faced off against them in the first round of Regionals. Once again, they lost, this time by a score of 3-0.

The first two goals came in the first few minutes of the game. “They put the ball in the air and over our heads,” said senior captain Tessa Deveraux. “We thought that’s what they were going to do, but they made two quality shots,” she went on to say.

“I thought that we were going to come back after the two goals,” said Deveraux. “We dominated the possession when we had the ball on the ground,” she said. The third goal came very late in the game off of a corner kick. “It caught us off guard because we were so focused on scoring and coming back,” Deveraux said.

“In 2009, we lost on penalty kicks and last year we lost 2 to 0,” said Head Coach Hayley Nies. “They scored in the first 5 minutes and then late in the second half, but we had our chances,” said Coach Nies.

But how did they get this far?

On Friday, Nov. 4, Jamesville-DeWitt Varsity Girls Soccer team defeated Whitesboro High School, 3-0, to take home the title of Section III Champions.

J-DHS was led in scoring by senior captain Tessa Devereaux, who scored two goals in the Sectional Finals game. Her first goal (and first goal of the game) came, after a pass from junior Jessica Holmes, with 56 seconds left in the first half. “It was a great time to score,” said Head Coach Hayley Nies. “It took the wind out of their sails,” she continued.

After a relatively slow start, J-DHS came out much stronger in the second half. “It was a great team effort,” said Coach Nies. “We went out and won all the 50-50 balls, and the defense was on fire.”

After an overall record of 18-1-1 , a Section III championship three-peat and 111 total goals scored, the team’s run has come to an end for this year.

“I’m definitely sad that it’s over, but we accomplished a lot so we can’t look back on it negatively,” said Deveraux. “Also, I couldn’t be prouder of the team,” she added.
