This year's Grammy Awards had something for everyone. There were beautiful dresses, show-stopping performances and surprising upsets in several award categories.
The red carpet shone with J-Lo's sparkly disco ball dress, Rihanna's fluffy couteur, and Gaga's Egg? Yes people, Gaga came to the award show in a translucent egg, carried by some of her scantily clad back-up dancers. As in the past, with the meat dress, Gaga was championing another grandiose message. The ploy was coupled with her new single "Born This Way" to express her support of the gay men and women of the world.
It wasn't just the fashion though that made the 53rd Annual Grammy Award Show memorable. The night was packed with thrilling performances including a moving tribute to Aretha Franklin featuring Christina Aguilera and the glowing Jennifer Hudson. Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith also performed an energetic spectacle from Bieber's new movie "Never Say Never."
One of the most anticipated events of the night was that of Eminem and Dr. Dre's performance of the duo's new single "I Need a Doctor." As a moderate Eminem fan at best, the performance left me unimpressed. For his diehard fans, however, I am sure he thoroughly impressed with this new hit as well as with his performance with Rihanna earlier in the night.
The night also came with serious upsets in high profile categories such as Best New Artist and Album of the Year. Despite Justin Bieber and Mumford and Sons' nominations for Best New Artist, lower profile Esperanza Spalding took the Grammy. Unfortunately, I have found myself a victim of the rampant Bieber Fever and consequently this decision did disappoint me.
In addition to this surprise, Eminem failed to win the Grammy for Album of Year once again. The award went to the indie group from Canada, Arcade Fire, proving their huge leap into the mainstream music industry. With superstars like Gaga up for the award, this feat was most definitely a huge accomplishment for the group.
As a whole, this year's Grammy Awards had a little bit of everything. Gaga kept it crazy, Bieber broke it down, and jaws dropped as Arcade Fire snagged the most coveted Grammy for Album of the Year.
