Jeremy Davin, sophomore at Jamesville-Dewitt High School, won a very unique award – second place in a 1,000 yard shooting competition at the North Coast Shooting Academy. He traveled during Spring Break (April 23-25) to Thunder Valley, Ohio.

The award was for 2nd place in a 1,000 yard competition. "[The set up] is done by score," Davin describes, "there's a target with 6 rounds, 5 shots, each, with a maximum of ten points per target." The highest score you can get is 300, according to Davin. He scored a 207, using a .50 caliber rifle. There were a total of about 50 people at the competition, but only about 40 of them participated in the same event as Jeremy.

The first time Davin ever picked up a gun was about a year ago. Jeremy said he decided to get in to it "randomly," as a hobby. Davin says he practices shooting with his dad. "I'm really interested in math and science," he said, "I want to become an engineer when I'm older, so the math and science parts are fascinating to me." Davin's interested in the ballistics, which is the science of mechanics that deal with the flight, behavior, and effects of projectiles, especially bullets according to encyclopedia.com. Davin plans to continue his shooting, and plans on entering more competitions to try and win more awards. Why he likes this sport is "hard to say." "It's difficult, but I like a challenge, and it's a lot of fun and rewarding. You put a lot of hard work into it and get a good result."
