Each week 13.6 million fans tune in to watch Fox's hit series "Glee," according to Nielsen's ratings. "Glee" is a comedy TV series about an underappreciated high school glee club that is trying to make its way back up the "popularity food chain." Because of the humor, singing, dancing and drama this show seems to appeal to many people.

"'Glee' is FABULOUS! Kids can relate to some of the things that Glee club goes through. Not to mention, when I watch Glee I start jammin' out!" says Jamesville-DeWitt High School freshman Minayah Carson.

Some students from our very own J-DHS were involved in the "gLeek Festival" on Friday, April 30. The concert consisted of some of the most popular songs from "Glee's" first season, including "Defying Gravity," "Sweet Caroline" and "Don't Stop Believin'."

Some viewers are beginning to call themselves "gleeks," a twist on the words, geek and glee. "Since I am an appreciator of 'Glee,' I would definitely consider myself a 'Gleek!'" J-DHS sophomore Mariah Mosher says.

The diverse characters make "Glee" relatable to many people. J-DHS sophomore Chip Weber says he is most like Mercedes Jones"”an outspoken, confident, African-American teenager. Weber claims that he is not a "gleek" because he's "not, like, obsessed with it," but it's the only show that he watches.

Mosher and J-DHS senior Gleydis Merino also believe they are like Mercedes. Mosher adds, "She is a strong, powerful woman."

J-DHS freshman Taylor Fallon believes she is most like Sue Sylvester, a clever, spiteful gym teacher, who will do anything to terminate the "Glee" club.

J-DHS sophomore Gisselle Haynes says she would like to be Kurt Hummel, a fashionable, laid-back tenor, who has high self-esteem even though he faces identity problems.

"Glee" held an open-casting audition to fill three new spots for season two, which began April 13, 2010. Although Mosher is a "gleek," she says that she would "never in [her] life" try-out to be on the show. Fallon agrees with Mosher. On the other hand, Merino and Weber would both like to be on the show. Haynes said she would like to be an extra on the show.

One thing is for sure: J-DHS is full of gleeks and it's staying that way for a while.
