Leadership, listening, and being approachable: these are qualities that Key Club President Rebecca Doss, junior, says that every club president should have.

Doss has been involved in Key Club here at Jamesville-DeWitt High School since she was a freshman. Key Club is a service program lead by students. It teaches high schoolers about leadership through serving others. She decided to run for president last year because she really enjoyed being a part of Key Club.

Doss's jobs as president mainly are to oversee everything, and hold weekly meetings that inform the members on upcoming events. Doss says that being president has been easier than she thought when it comes to meeting others and talking to them. But it has also been very time consuming.

"Rebecca Doss has done an excellent job in leading and managing our club for the past year," said art teacher and Key Club advisor, Lisa Troubetaris. She says that a good president needs to be "focused, organized, and capable of communicating with both peers and adults." Mrs. Troubetaris has been the advisor to Key Club for 10 years. Her main jobs consist of encouraging members, giving suggestions to the officers of the club, and help make things run smoothly.

Some big events coming up for Key Club are the March of Dimes and Relay for Life.

Relay for Life is a 24-hour walk to raise money for cancer research. Members of Key Club will separate into groups and must have one member of the group walking the track around the clock. It is put on by the American Cancer Society and will be held at Long Branch in Onondaga Park in June.

March of Dimes is a walk to raise money for premature babies. The club is supported financially to walk through fundraisers and donations. This year the walk takes place in the fall at Long Branch in Onondaga Park.

Doss is not only active in Key Club. She also runs for J-DHS on the cross-country and track teams, takes piano and is involved in a youth and government group. She does this all while leading Key Club and doing regular schoolwork. Doss says that at times it can all be very stressful, but it's manageable. "I love being busy," says Doss.

Doss has done well this year as president and has been re-elected to be president for the '10-'11 school year.
