Boys Indoor Track- Indoor track is a good change of pace from track in the spring says junior Danny Driscoll. However, "It is still a good group of guys with a great coach," he says. The Jamesville-DeWitt Boys Indoor Track team is building on success from last year. The boys team has won the Freedom League and Class A Sectional championships the last two seasons and has key members returning like senior Bumkoth Jiak, who can run everything from the 400 to the two mile says Head Coach William Leberman. To start out the season the boys took first place out of eight teams in a meet at Cortland High School.
Girls Indoor Track- Like the boys team the J-DHS girls indoor track team took first place out of eight at a meet at Cortland High School to start the season. The girls team also won the Freedom League and the Class A Sectional championship last season and have powerhouses like seniors Eileen Cody and Amanda Tan, team captain, returning. Assistant Coach Emily Rowles had great things to say about the team: "Our success as a distance team is dependent upon each member setting goals for the distance races. If each member works hard to improve, then the wins can happen," she says.
Boys Basketball- Everyone knows the Jamesville-DeWitt Boys Basketball team is still good, but can they bring home a third straight state championship? "We know we are good," says senior Kenny Schunck. "But we have to stay together as a team and show the state what we are all about." The Post-Standard ranked J-DHS atop the board above Corcoran High School and Liverpool High School . To start the season off the team beat Chittenango by a score of 93-38. Key players like sophomore Dajuan Coleman and senior Lamar Kearse look to fill the shoes of current Syracuse point guard, Brandon Triche.
Girls Basketball- The Lady Red Rams are living up to high standards, posting two wins and one loss in the early part of the season. "I am excited to come to the games," says junior Thomas Schulte. The girls dropped their one loss to Christian Brothers Academy, yet put a beat down on not only Chittenango (49-16), but also Massena(58-47). Key players include seniors Nicole Ortega and Liz Beville. Last year the girls lost just short of the Section III Championship, but are determined to take home the trophy this year.
Boys Wrestling- The CBA/J-D wrestling team beat Pulaski High School 48-30 to achieve their first victory in over 20 years,. "The first year will be tough and filled with challenges," says sophomore and wrestler Danny Meile. Meile and company don't seem to care that the program has been extinct for years, looking to grab the section championship. "I'm absolutely ecstatic about the rise of wrestling," says Athletic Director Bill Brown. "We've put a lot of hard work into Pee-Wee programs to strengthen interest and the overall outcome of the program." The boys will run into opponents like E-SM and Homer later in the season.
Girls Volleyball- Holding a record of 2-3 currently, the Jamesville Dewitt High School Girls' Volleyball Team hopes to remain focused and perform well. Seniors Jocelyn Shibley, Alyssa Miller, and Abby Jo Andrews lead the team this season as captains. According to Shibley, this team has the most heart and determination that they've had in awhile. They plan on keeping their team positive in order for them to reach their goal of making sectionals. Miller thinks that having fun yet still staying focused helps the team perform well. "When we play, we have fun, which is always needed. We have a good pass, then a good set, and finally a good hit to put the ball over," she says. Also holding high expectations for the team is Coach Tuck. "He's a great coach and has faith in us and that's what helps us win." Shibley says. They practice 6 days a week, sometimes over 2 hours long, either in the gym or in the weight room. "Tuck knows the balance of being too harsh and being a strong coach, practices are a great time along with a great workout." Miller says. Tuck makes a planned schedule before each practice and sticks with it. All three captains agree that practices are usually a tough workout. "He has high expectations for us to be the best we can be." Andrew says.
"We all get along well and whether we on the court or not we always have a good time." Miller says.
Boys Hockey- Currently holding a record of 4-3-1 (3-1), Christian brothers Academy/Jamesville Dewitt High School Varsity Boys Hockey team is planning on going far. Key players Harry Kalet, junior, Brendan Flanagan, sophomore, and starting goaltender Dan Distefano, junior, look to carry the team deep into the season. Flanagan said that they were a strongly knit, young team, ready to win league championships. Distefano agrees with this statement and says, "defensive bonding sessions add to the chemistry of the team." Practices run for an hour and a half, six days a week. Although it is hard work, the CBA/J-DHS hockey team thinks it will pay off in the end. Kalet hopes to win sectional championships this year along with a few games in States. Coach John Parks' words of wisdom can "really rally the team!" He also says.
"I'm so excited that we have a chance to win," says Distefano.
